American Idol Runner Up Katherine McPhee Will Be Back On TV

American Idol season 5 runner up Katharine McPhee is gearing up for a return to TV.

The singer and now actress, who made her acting debut in the film ‘The House Bunny” (she played a pregnant girl) has been cast in the pilot for Smash, a new Steven Spielberg-produced musical drama series. The show follows characters who join forces to launch a Broadway musical inspired by Marilyn Monroe. That sentence alone sounds a little obscure. I have to believe there’s more depth to it than that.

Smash will also star Debra Messing (of Will and Grace fame) as a lyricist.

Taylor Hicks won season five of Idol, and went on to star in the touring company of the Broadway revival of “Grease.”
