Film fans, brace yourself for either the best or the worst news you ever heard: Martin Scorsese wants to use 3D technology in ALL of his future films.

The Huffington Post reported earlier this week that at a the CinemaCon convention in Last Vegas on Wednesday, Scorsese said he is completely enamored with the film format:

“There is something that 3-D gives to the picture that takes you into another land and you stay there and it’s a good place to be.”

The Academy Award-winning director was speaking at a filmmaking panel alongside director Ang Lee, both of whom claim 3-D technology is the future of filmmaking.  In fact, Scorsese said that he wishes his past films, RAGING BULL and TAXI DRIVER were in 3D, because the added dimension allows the audience to feel a stronger connection to the story and actors on screen.

“It’s like seeing a moving sculpture of the actor and it’s almost like a combination of theater and film combined and it immerses you in the story more…I saw audiences care about the people more.”

Scorsese said he never thought he would have the opportunity to make a 3-D film, and conquering the technology was challenging at first, but he watched 3-D versions of Alfred Hitchcock’s DIAL M FOR MURDER and THE HOUSE OF WAX for inspiration.

As for Lee, he urged theater owners to continue investing in their movie houses, saying that “especially with 3-D, this is a new era coming. We have to keep up with it.”
