Katie Holmes is turning to the Great White Way to resurrect her career. The actress will star in Theresa Rebeck’s Dead Accounts, a five-character comedy. The role had apparently been locked before word of her divorce was known.

Her last appearance on Broadway was also her first, a 2008 production of All My Sons.

After Holmes began dating Cruise she took very few roles – but did some films, including the Mad Money, The Romantics, The Extra Man and Adam Sandler’s Jack and Jill. (as well as some others.) She pulled out of The Dark Knight. Every time she backed out of a role there were questions about whether her career was being (mis)managed by Tom Cruise and Scientology.

Dead Accounts will open on Broadway this fall at the Music Box Theatre. It tells the story of a son who returns to his family’s home in Cincinnati flush with money, which raises red flags for his sister, who is living with their elderly parents. Holmes will play the sister role.
