Beach Boys Vegas Musical Is A Flop, Will Be Closing

The Beach Boys may be one of the biggest bands in music, but that still doesn't guarantee a musical based on their songs can survive.

The Beach Boys may be one of the biggest bands in music, but that still doesn’t guarantee a musical based on their songs can survive.

Las Vegas Weekly is reporting that despite the lead of “Rock of Ages” director Kristin Hanggi and one hell of a soundtrack, “Surf:The Musical” will be closing its doors after only six weeks.

Word around town is that the production reportedly never sold more than 200 tickets to any show, and at least one show sold fewer than 50 tickets total.  (The theater was built to seat 1,500…)

The storyline follows a “failed young musician who returns to his beachside hometown only to discover his ex-girlfriend is now with a real rocker.”  Previews opened June 29th at Planet Hollywood, with the formal debut taking place July 17th.

The musical will close August 15th.

This isn’t the first time, however, that a Beach Boys show went down the tubes.  In 2005, another musical based on their music, entitled “Good Vibrations,” left Broadway after only 94 performances.
