If you’re tired of waiting for the first inkling of footage from STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, then you can finally breathe free: It’ll be here in time for Christmas!

Following the cue from Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, JJ Abrams will premiere the first nine minutes of the highly anticipated sequel in front of all Imax prints of THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY. Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX released a statement, saying,

“Our longtime partners J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park – the footage is absolutely incredible…Their use of the IMAX® Camera and canvas is sure to impress current and future Star Trek fans alike, and we’re thrilled to once again work with our friends at Paramount Pictures to offer this extended ‘first look’ at this highly anticipated summer blockbuster.”

“To further the IMAX experience, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS used IMAX cameras to capture several sequences. Exclusively in IMAX theaters, sequences filmed with the extremely high-resolution cameras will expand to fill more of the screen with unprecedented crispness and clarity, putting moviegoers right into the explosive action and vast scope of the film.”

But don’t worry, all you fans who don’t want to spend the money for IMAX…while you won’t be able to see the full nine minutes in front of regular prints, all standard showings will still have the first official trailer for you to enjoy!

So now, your only issue is to try and figure out which friggen version of THE HOBBIT you’re going to see…48fps, the normal 24fps, Imax, non Imax, with a STAR TREK preview or trailer…

Or you could just wait until the trailer (and probably many bootleg copies of the prologue) hit the web the following week…

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS beams up into theaters May 17, 2013.
