TITANIC To Be Re-released in 3D on the 100th Anniversary of the Ship’s Sinking

TITANIC is still, in my mind, the highest grossing movie of all time.  There were no 3D tickets back then, no IMAX tickets, and the movie was able to build on itself, staying in the number one spot for 15 consecutive weeks.

Today, the trio that is Paramount, 20th Century Fox, and James Cameron have announced that TITANIC will be re-released in theaters on April 6, 2012 to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the ship.  And that’s not all..the entire movie will be in 3D!

That’s right!  So now, that iceberg that the big ship hits?  It’ll be right on top of you!  All those people falling off the ship?  They’ll be falling out of the screen and into your lap!

And the reason for the 3D conversion?  Cameron says:

“There’s a whole generation that’s never seen ‘TITANIC’ as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen. And this will be ‘TITANIC’ as you’ve never seen it before, digitally re-mastered at 4K and painstakingly converted to 3D. With the emotional power intact and the images more powerful than ever, this will be an epic experience for fans and newcomers alike.”

I know that Cameron’s 3D technology is the real deal…that’s why we have AVATAR.  However, is this really necessary?  Would you see TITANIC in 3D?  Maybe for the sinking or Kate Winslet…?  You tell us…
