Get Ready to Start Paying for 3D Glasses at Movies

Besides the crazy ticket prices and the horrible conversions, we now have another reason to hate 3D films: we may have to pay for the glasses!

Besides the crazy ticket prices and the horrible conversions, we now have another reason to hate 3D films: we may have to pay for the glasses!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, when you’re paying the extra money for a 3D feature, you are actually not paying anything for the glasses.  Those are paid for, instead, by the studio making the film.  (Yup!  The studio pays an extra $5-$10 million for all those pairs…a common practice started to help cajole theaters to convert to 3D in the first place!)

Well now, Sony is saying that they will no longer get the glasses for their films, and it will be up to the theaters to pay for them. If you haven’t known (I didn’t until recently), theaters barely make any money on the films already, and actually get most of their income from concessions, hence those ridiculous prices.

Movies on Sony’s schedule next year include the 3D releases of MEN IN BLACK III and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.  If moviegoers are so desperate to see them in that format, they could always keep their glasses from an earlier release (even now, when they’re FREE), but the question is do you really want to go through all that effort?  Is this just another reason to forget about 3D movies altogether, or could they still survive?
