THE DEPARTED was considered by many to be a perfect movie.  But with the way it ended, it almost seemed guaranteed that a sequel couldn’t happen.

Not exactly true…

In a new interview with Collider, DEPARTED screenwriter William Monahan gave his ideas as to where the script could possibly go.  Here are some choice questions (via Joblo) on the topic:

Collider: Any news on a Departed sequel? Do you think it will ever happen?

William Monahan: No. I think Warner Bros. would have liked to see a synopsis of it. I don’t do synopses and I don’t pitch. Personally, I don’t know if it’s ever going to happen. I know the film, I’ve got the film in my head. Even if everybody didn’t come back, which they could in the film as I’ve configured it, it would be a hell of a paycheck for somebody to write. The film would have to be absolutely superb.

C: Would you be in the future but go back to the past to tie it all together?

Monahan: My idea actually is to set the film before, during and after the action of the first film, which I think would be extraordinary. If those guys want to cough up the dough, we can do it any time.

C: Is it one of these films that’s dependent on you seeing the original Departed or can it exist on its own?

Monahan: Essentially, in the middle section of the thing I’ve intended, you’d see actions that take place during the original Departed, but aren’t on screen in the original Departed. There would be off-screen things that occur at that point in the story. But it would work seamlessly as a movie of its own.

Usually, I’m completely against sequels, but that idea actually sounds pretty damn cool…and having a writing like William Monahan behind your project really can’t help but make it better…

So you tell us, what do you think about a DEPARTED sequel?  With it’s backing, go for it, or let sleeping dogs lie?
