In Diane Keaton’s new book, Then Again, she opens up about how she developed an eating disorder as a young actress.

At just 19 years old, she was up for a Broadway role in the music Hair – but the casting directors were clear that she needed to lose ten pounds. And so, she developed bulimia… and suffered from the condition for five years.

While she did get the part, she admits that she didn’t understand the magnitude of the issue at the time, saying to People Magazine that it wasn’t something talked about that much: “I don’t think it was called bulimia then…It was just this trick you could do. It’s a horrible problem. Ugly and awful.”

Keaton says that therapy helped her overcome the disorder.
