As you may know, Iran won its first Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for Asghar Farhadi’s A SEPARATION this past Sunday, beating Israel’s FOOTNOTE.  And apparently, Iranians think that means Israel is one step closer to collapsing…

Javad Shamaghdari, head of Iran’s Cinematic Agency, has declared that the Oscar win is the “beginning of the collapse” of Israeli influence that “beats the drum of war”in the US.  This is ironic as hell for two reasons: First, A SEPARATION is not just a popular film in the US, but also in Israel, where it was released on February 9th with Hebrew subtitles!  And second, for the acceptance speech given by Asghar Farhadi, who said

“At the time when talk of war, intimidation, and aggression is exchanged between politicians, the name of their country, Iran, is spoken here through her glorious culture, a rich and ancient culture that has been hidden under the heavy dust of politics…

“I proudly offer this award to the people of my country, the people who respect all cultures and civilizations and despise hostility and resentment.’’

So basically, those two factors show the exact opposite of what the Iranian government is trying to convey.

I recommend you watch the speech below, as well as A SEPARATION to get a whole new view on the citizens and culture in Iran.  To finally get to see the flower beneath all the weeds is truly inspiring.
