Marc Webb’s status as a director may have increased ten-fold after THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, but that doesn’t mean that the director will be allowed to helm the sequel, even if he and Sony Pictures both want it to happen…

According to Worst Previews, when Webb first signed on to direct 500 DAYS OF SUMMER, Fox Searchlight had him sign a contract that would force him to direct at least one more film.  That film was supposed to happen before he directed SPIDER-MAN, but Fox decided to let him go, banking that the superhero film would let Webb return to them as a much more popular director.

Now, despite the fact that THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is already gearing up and getting ready to go, Fox wants to cash in on its investment, and is giving Webb two choices: direct its futuristic bio-thriller, AGE OF RAGE, right now, or direct the big-budget sequel and be forced to follow up with two straight films for them.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is set for a May 2, 2014 release date, so we should expect an official announcement sometime soon.
