BOX OFFICE: Bruce Willis On Top With Underwhelming Debut, Identity Thief A Winner

It may be that moviegoers have the winter blues - but there are still some winners at the box office this weekend.

Die HardIt may be that moviegoers have the winter blues – but there are still some winners at the box office this weekend.

Bruce Willis’ A Good Day to Die Hard, topped the box office with 25 million – but the debut is a weak one. Meanwhile, Identity Thief continues to impress with 23.4 million. Considering the film has reached 70 million in two weeks – double its modest 35 million dollar budget, Thief is a real winner.

Placing third, the Nicholas Sparks adaptation Safe Haven opened with $21.4 million – definitely benefiting from the Valentine’s Day push.

Weinstein’s animated film Escape from Planet Earth finished in fourth place with $16.1 million. The fact that there have been no family friendly films out for a little while, there was likely some hope that it would have fared better.

Coming in at fifth was zombie comedy Warm Bodies, which took in $9 million. The film has fared well so far, with a gross of $50.2 million and climbing. Good news, given that the movie cost about $35 million to make.

Rounding out the list:

1. A Good Day to Die Hard – $25 million ($33.2 million total)
2. Safe Haven – $21.4 million ($30.5 million total)
3. Identity Thief – $23.4 million ($70.7 million total)
4. Escape from Planet Earth – $16.1 million ($16.1 million total)
5. Warm Bodies – $9 million ($50.2 million total)
6. Beautiful Creatures – $7.5 million ($10 million total)
