Debra MessingAs NBC’s Broadway based series Smash eeks out its last breath, Debra Messing has locked a lead role in a comedy pilot for CBS.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the current Smash star and former Will and Grace headliner “will star as Shira, the happily married yet harried mother to three who’s a ghost writer for a demanding celebrity chef. Between her job and three children — ranging in age from preschool to 7, she feels like the world’s worst mother because of her tendency to cut corners.” The show is based on an already successful show format in Israel.

THR goes on to report that Messing is the first person to be cast in the pilot and receive a co-executive producer credit as well.

The gig is all but a confirmation that the death knell is ringing for NBC’s Smash, which recently was relegated to a weekend airing,

The new series will be executive produced by Sex and the City and Smash verterans Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky, as well as a handful of additional EP’s.
