Last night at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards, pop icon Madonna appeared to present the Video of the Year award. Before presenting the award, the singer took a minute…several minutes…to “pay tribute” to the recently deceased Aretha Franklin. Now there are quotes around “pay tribute” because I’m not exactly sure that’s what she did. Madonna’s speech started out promising enough by saying “Aretha Louise Franklin changed the course of my life…” I think we all thought this would lead into a heartwarming tale about how inspirational the Queen of Soul was to a young, aspiring singer back in the 80’s. Well, we were dead wrong. Instead, Madonna told the story of how she was a struggling dancer who sang “You Make Me Feel (Like A Natural Woman)” at an audition that ultimately led her to become the mega star she is today. At the end of the speech, Madonna then regaled viewers in another anecdote in which her butt was exposed back in the 1984 VMA’s. An event that led her to becoming an even bigger star.
Butt story aside, we can all kind of see where Madonna was trying to go with her tribute if we squint, but ultimately viewers felt disappointed that the memorial was Madonna-centric. Unfortunately, fans don’t have a place to air out their grievances…oh wait…they do! That’s right, Twitter nearly exploded after Madonna left the stage and here is just a glimpse of what viewers had to say:
I’m so lost. I thought Madonna was supposed to be paying homage to Aretha but I all heard was her paying homage to herself. HEAVY on the Mayonnaise……

Madonna talking about guitar lessons, Paris baguettes and her ass hanging out while she looked for a stiletto with the image of Aretha Franklin behind her is everything I expected from the #VMAs
