In case you’ve been wearing a blindfold for the last two weeks, Bird Box is the Netflix original film that is shattering records. The horror film was watched by 45 million accounts in the first week, a record breaking debut. The film depicts an apocalyptic crisis in which people die if they see the creatures that have taken over the planet. Marjorie played by Sandra Bullock, overcomes numerous obstacles to protect herself and her child(ren) before ultimately taking a 42 hour journey down a river to a sanctuary. With great popularity comes great memes, so you know the internet went crazy with this one.
If taken out of context the plot can easily sound comical which is ironically why the decision to never show the creatures on camera was made. An interview with Bloody Disgusting revealed the design of the creatures, which were part snake, part baby face? Bullock explained:
“It was snake-like, and I was like, ‘I don’t want to see it when it first happens. Just bring it into the room. We’ll shoot the scene.’ I turn and he’s like this [growling at me.] It’s making me laugh. It was just a long fat baby.”
Director, Susan Bier, added:
“It so easily becomes funny. We actually shot that and spent a lot of energy on, but every time I saw it, I was like this is not going to be tense. It’s just going to be funny. At first, Sandy was like, ‘I don’t want to see it’ because she thought it was scary. Then it was like, ‘Don’t show it to me because [I’ll laugh].’ Every time I did it, I was like, ‘Shit, that’s a different film.'”
The creature was actually thought to be so funny looking that they’re going to send it to Saturday Night Live! It sounds like the right decision was made. Besides the film was scary enough without ever seeing them!
