Blockbuster to Be Bought by DISH Network… - POP GOES THE WEEK!!

Blockbuster to Be Bought by DISH Network…

Really?  This is like a dying guy trying to save a dead guy.  (Yeah, I don’t care what anyone says…that’s the best analogy I could come up with.)

Apparently, Dish Network has bought Blockbuster for a hefty sum of $320 million:

“With its more than 1,700 store locations, a highly recognizable brand and multiple methods of delivery, Blockbuster will complement our existing video offerings while presenting cross-marketing and service extension opportunities for DISH Network,” said Tom Cullen, executive vice president of Sales, Marketing and Programming for DISH Network. “While Blockbuster’s business faces significant challenges, we look forward to working with its employees to re-establish Blockbuster’s brand as a leader in video entertainment.”

Okay, so let me get this straight…satellite dishes and renting videos from your local store equals leaders in video entertainment?  I’m sorry, but I don’t remember the last time I rented a movie, and even though the signs in the windows usually read something like “4 MOVIES FOR $20” or “ALL FREE!  JUST COME AND GET THEM, PLEASE!” (okay…maybe not that far…), I’d still rather go to Best Buy or just use my Netflix.

I dare you all to tell me the last time you used Blockbuster to rent a movie.  And does anybody still have satellite anyway?  If you do, then I completely apologize, but I really don’t remember the last time I did either.  So I think the real question is…will this save Blockbuster, or is this just another way to try and save the dying breed of store-rentals?
