Disney Abandons STAR WARS 3D Rereleases; JJ Abrams Says He Doesn’t Care About 2015…Just Wants To “Make Fans Proud”

After years of George Lucas basically squeezing every last dime he could out of his Star Wars Universe, it is so refreshing (if not backwards) to hear that the Disney corporation is trying to do right by the series and fans in regards to the new movies.

We are now getting word that Disney executives are cancelling all future theatrical releases of the saga’s 3D conversions so they could dedicate all their resources to making the best EPISODE VII they can.  (Even putting EPISODE VII aside for a moment, someone please tell me what the point of 3D conversions would have been if not for just an extra few million dollars in the bank…)

To add to the excitement, we’ve also heard that director JJ Abrams is preparing to start working on a script with Michael Arndt, and while producer Kathleen Kennedy announced that a release date would be sometime in 2015, the pair is not committed to that timeframe, but to making the best sequel they could.

So what does this mean for the release date?  Yes, many fans may be disappointed if they would have to wait longer for a new STAR WARS film, but coming from Abrams, I think any delay is a blessing.  There is no script, no cast, and no sets, and we are expecting to get a decent new entry in two years?  When Abrams is dedicated to a project, he gives it his all, and as he has said before, he wants to do right by the millions of fans, and not just rush something together after decades of waiting:

“You know, obviously, it’s so early.  I can just say what I want to do: I want to do the fans proud. I want to make sure the story is something that touches people. And we’re just getting started. I’m very excited.”

We are, too…
