The science world is mourning today as renowned scientist Stephen Hawking, died overnight. Considered to be the world’s greatest living scientist, Hawking has made a lengthy list of contributions in physics, astronomy and math. To name just one, Hawking, along with Roger Penrose, merged Einsteins theory of relativity with quantum theory to infer that the world began with the Big Bang and will end in a black hole, a concept not previously conceived. He also became a pop culture icon, appearing in shows such as The Simpsons, Futurama and Big Bang Theory. The Theory of Everything, a movie chronicling Hawking’s life journey and battle with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) was released in 2014. Hawking received degrees from the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. Along with his 3 children and 3 grandchildren, Hawking left behind his philosophy that the future of mankind will be in space. He hypothesized that surviving the next 100 years on this planet will be difficult, so surviving the next thousand or million seems highly unlikely. Perhaps the best takeaway from Hawking’s life are his fundamental beliefs, especially stated in his quote, “the greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.”
Here are just a few tweets posted in remembrance of the legend.
