Jim Carrey is playing a stone-cold, Polish detective who is investigating a publicized homicide in a new thriller?…allllllrighty then. A huge leap from the days of donning a magical green mask or crawling out of the anus of a mechanized rhinoceros, Carrey shows off his serious acting chops in this dark, murder mystery. Dark Crimes tells the story of a detective who investigates a murder of a business man, only to discover that the murder is identical to that of a character’s in a newly published novel. The film stars Carrey as detective Tadek, Charolette Gainsbourg as sex-club worker Kasia, and Marton Csokas as novelist Kozlow. Interestingly enough, the film originally debuted back in 2016 as part of the Warsaw International Film Festival, and is finally making it’s way to the North American markets.
While Carrey is mostly known for his comedic roles, this film will not be his first foray into a different genre. Carrey starred in the 2001 romantic/period film The Majestic, as well as the 2007 psychological thriller Number 23. Unfortunately both of those films were panned by critics and fans alike, but there is an obvious appeal to the actor’s serious roles otherwise production companies would not keep casting him. Hopefully this film will bring the success for a serious role that the actor has been striving for. Check out the trailer below!
