You have all these young stars with personal issues out in the open…Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan, Demi Lovato. Yet, one person that has kept his demons very private was HARRY POTTER, himself, Daniel Radcliffe.
In a new interview with GQ magazine (via People), Radcliffe admitted suffering from a major drinking problem:
“I became so reliant on [alcohol] to enjoy stuff…There were a few years there when I was just so enamored with the idea of living some sort of famous person’s lifestyle that really isn’t suited to me.”
The 21-year-old actor says his battle with alcohol first came to be on the set of HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE, the sixth entry in the series. And he really doesn’t know how he got away with it the whole time…
“I really got away with that because there were so many instances when a paparazzi shot like that could have been taken.”
Luckily, Radcliffe says he has been sober since August 2010, and more than going out, he prefers staying in and relaxing with the people who really matter:
“I’m actually enjoying the fact that I can have a relationship with my girlfriend [Olive Uniacke] where I’m really pleasant and not fucked up totally all the time … As much as I would love to be the person that goes to parties and has a couple of drinks and has a nice time, that doesn’t work for me. I’d rather just sit at home and read, or go out to dinner with someone, or talk to someone I love, or talk to somebody that makes me laugh.”
Radcliffe can now be seen on Broadway in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”. The final installment of the Harry Potter series, HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART II, will be in theaters next Friday.
