Sean Penn Helped Save American Hikers Jailed in Iran

We all know that Sean Penn is a brilliant actor, and a huge political activist, but did we really know that he had so much clout, he could make a difference in the lives of the Iranian hikers?

According to Reuters, the actor flew to Venezuela to ask President Hugo Chavez (who is apparently Penn’s personal friend) to call Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and intervene. Chaves did just that.

A source told Reuters:

“The American ‘intellectual’ who took up the case with [Chavez] was Sean Penn…Penn was very committed to the case. He flew to Caracas several months ago to raise it with Chavez and he kept on it.”

Penn’s representatives confirmed that the actor was involved with the release, and the hikers thanked Penn personally during their press conference.  Penn, himself, however, refused to comment on the situation.
