Fans of Kathy Bates were hit hard today with the announcement that the Oscar winning actress had not only been battling cancer for a second time, but underwent a double mastectomy earlier this week.
Fans of Kathy Bates were hit hard today with the announcement that the Oscar winning actress had not only been battling cancer for a second time, but underwent a double mastectomy earlier this week.
The 64-year-old actress released a statement to Us Weekly today, saying,
“It’s no secret that I am an ovarian cancer survivor, nine years and counting. But few know that several weeks ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer…After much consideration I underwent a double mastectomy. Luckily, I don’t have to undergo radiation or chemo. My Family call me Kat because I always land on my feet and thankfully this is no exception. My doctors have assured me I’m going to be around for a long time. I’m looking forward to getting back to work doing what I love to do.”
Bates also tweeted a two-part message to her followers, saying,
“Hey all, sorry for the long silence. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 months ago and am recovering from a double mastectomy.”
With her usual sense of humor, Bates followed up with a reference to her recently cancelled CBS show:
“I don’t miss my breasts as much as I miss Harry’s Law…Thanks for all the sweet tweets. Y’all kept me going.”
Bates was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003. We wish her only the best.
