Neil Patrick Harris Says “How I Met Your Mother” Season 8 Will Probably Be The Last

Despite rumors flying for a while about a season nine for the CBS hit, “How I Met Your Mother”, series star Neil Patrick Harris is now speaking out and saying that season eight will probably be it.

Despite rumors flying for a while about a season nine for the CBS hit, “How I Met Your Mother”, series star Neil Patrick Harris is now speaking out and saying that season eight will probably be it.

In a new interview with Access Hollywood, Harris said that even though the cast loves their show, they are all ready to move on:

“Our contracts end at [Season] 8, so it’s one of those, you know, if they wanna do 9, they’re welcome to, but we have a lot of other things [going on]…Cobie [Smulders] has got ‘The Avengers’ that just made a billion dollars, Jason [Segel] makes a ton of movies, I’m anxious to move East and Josh [Radnor] is directing and acting in movies as well. So, we all are anxious to move forward.”

Not sugarcoating anything, Harris said that if CBS really wanted a season nine, they would have to give the cast the right amount of money to stay:

“I think the only way I think a season 9 or any longer would happen would be [if it were] financially right — that’s the reality of it…We love the show, we love doing it – eight years is a long time and we’re as happy a family as we’ve ever been.”

While I would miss seeing the adventures of Ted and the gang every week, I would be very happy with the show ending after the upcoming season.  There is nothing worse than a show overstaying its welcome or extending just to make money, and since the writers have already planned out the beats of the next season to be the final one, why mess with that?

The supposed final season of “How I Met Your Mother” starts this Monday on CBS.
