Will Smith and Jaden Teaming Up for New M. Night Shyamalan Movie

Yes, you heard right.  After THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS, there is no doubt that Will and Jaden Smith could bring the emotion, but with M. Night Shyamalan?

According to a Columbia press release, the story goes:

Set 1,000 years into the future, a young boy navigates an abandoned and sometimes scary Earth to save himself and his estranged father after their ship crashes.

Jaden Smith is set to star opposite his father, Will Smith, for director M. Night Shyamalan in an untitled sci-fi adventure, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures. Shyamalan and Will Smith will produce with James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith and Ken Stovitz, Smith’s partners at Overbrook Entertainment. The screenplay is by M. Night Shyamalan and Gary Whitta.

A “sometimes scary Earth?”  Really?  And what is it the rest of the time?  Because if it’s only SOMETIMES scary, I don’t think I want to see the movie as badly as it being “always scary”.

The end result, after THE HAPPENING and THE LAST AIRBENDER, is anyone’s guess.  Shyamalan has been on a downward spiral for years.  Will Smith is king at the movies.  And when you are box office royalty, there’s got to be something about a script that draws you to it.  So with that, I give Shyamalan some benefit of the doubt…but I’m not sure how much…
