Dan Aykroyd Says GHOSTBUSTERS 3 Will Happen With or Without Murray…Gives Details on Script

We’ve been hearing about GHOSTBUSTERS 3 for years, now.  It feels like every couple of months, Dan Aykroyd comes out of hiding to say that it’s going to happen.  Then a few days later, Bill Murray shoots it down.  Sprinkle in some rumors about younger castings, and you got a roller coaster ride.

Well now, the newest update that Aykroyd had on the Dennis Miller Show is that the movie will happen.  The script is done, it’s great, and it doesn’t count on Murray:

“Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray. That is our hope. We have an excellent script. What we have to remember is that ‘Ghostbusters’ is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributive to it in a massive way, as was the director and Harold [Ramis], myself and Sigourney [Weaver]. The concept is much bigger than an individual role and the promise of ‘Ghostbusters 3′ is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood.”

Want a few more plot details?  Here is what your favorite ghost fighters have been up to:

“My character, Ray, is now blind in one eye and can’t drive the cadillac. He’s got a bad knee and can’t carry the packs… Egon is too large to get into the harness. We need young blood and that’s the promise. We’re gonna hand it to a new generation.”

So with the SPACE COWBOYS or THE CREW version of GHOSTBUSTERS, who does Aykroyd see filling their shoes?  Could be anybody…

“there’s going to be a casting. We’re going to see everyone that wants to do it. We’re going to need… three guys and a young woman.”

Truth is, I really can’t see this little reboot of GHOSTBUSTERS happening without Peter Venkman.  He was the heart and the comic relief of those two movies.  But then again, while there have always been bad reboots, there have been some good ones too.  It’s just a matter of trusting what Aykroyd calls an ‘excellent script’.

  • I think I know why Bill Murray won’t be in this next movie. I saw a picture of him at Euston Station (saw it at http://i.imgur.com/f6UUU.jpg ). In my opinion, he looks really jaundice, and that would say liver or pancreas which would say his days are numbered. It is so sad, all those years of abusing his body with booze out the ying-yang finally caught up. That breaks my heart.
