He was an innovator that has changed the world in ways we are still yet to fully know. Steve Jobs, chairman of the board of Apple, has died at 56.

Apple has released this statement:

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.

Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.

His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.

Jobs contributions to modern society were innumerable. As co-founder,chairman, and former chief executive officer of Apple he changed the world and how we use technology. He previously served as chief executive of Pixar Animation Studios and served on the board of directors at The Walt Disney Company.

Jobs suffered a series of health problems in recent years, beginning with a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in 2004. In 2009 he described a period where he was experiencing hormonal imbalances, and noted in an internal memo at Apple that he had “learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought”  Later that year he had a liver transplant. After his medical leave, he returned to his role, but officially resigned from his post at Apple in August 2011.
