Stephen Colbert Explains Last Week’s Shutdown, Tackles All Rumors

Stephen Colbert left fans cold and confused last week, when he suddenly decided to put "The Colbert Report" on hiatus. Last night, the host returned to the airwaves with an explanation about what happened.

Stephen Colbert left fans cold and confused last week, when he suddenly decided to put “The Colbert Report” on hiatus.  Last night, the host returned to the airwaves with an explanation about what happened.

After running through all of the ridiculous Internet rumors and speculation surrounding his absence…rumors ranging from plastic surgery to the FCC to the Catholic church taking offense and rehab, Colbert simply said:

“Oh, one more thing. Evidently having 11 children makes you tough as nails…Confidential to a lovely lady.”

According to the Huffington Post, Colbert was talking directly to his 91-year-old mother, Lorna, who is “seriously ill.”  Colbert was one of 11 children (two brothers died along with his father in a plane crash in 1974).  Colbert had already thanked fans on Twitter Friday night.
