Sad news to report in the world of television today: Sherman Hemsley, the actor most famous for playing George Jefferson in the 1970s sitcom “The Jeffersons”, has passed away.

According to TMZ, Hemsley died at his home in El Paso, Texas.  He was discovered by his nurse, who initially thought the actor was asleep.

Hemsley first entered American households with his appearances on the classic sitcom, “All in the Family.”  The spin-off, “The Jeffersons”, made him a huge star.  He was also a professional singer and even released a version of “Ain’t that A Kick in the Head” back in 1989.

Hemsley, who had no wife and no kids, apparently died of natural causes.  He was 74 years old.

In honor of the man, watch what I still think is one of the funniest scenes from “The Jeffersons” (I’d like to think he’d have a sense of humor like this), as well as a beautiful talk about how he created such a legendary character.
