Marvel Fans Rejoice! Agent Coulson Lives, And Will Headline New S.H.I.E.L.D. Show!
Anybody who saw THE AVENGERS will agree…the death of Agent Phil Coulson was one of the most devastating moments in comic book movie history. Hell, the man wasn’t even a part of the Marvel comic universe, and somehow, starting with one line in IRON MAN, he has become a beloved staple of the series…Damn you, Loki!!!
But this weekend at the New York Comic Con, Jeph Loeb brought actor Clark Gregg on stage for the Marvel television panel, and made a stunning announcement that left everyone shocked: Coulson lives!!!
That’s right! After playing a short “memorial” video, the screen suddenly shifted to AVENGERS director Joss Whedon, who announced that Gregg’s Agent Coulson is not only alive, but will lead the new S.H.I.E.L.D. television show!
The exchange between Whedon and Marvel producer Kevin Feige was reportedly very playful. At first, Whedon denied the rumors, saying,
“We all love Clark Gregg, there’s no doubt about that…From before we made ‘The Avengers,’ we discussed whether there was a way for him to be a part of the Marvel Universe, perhaps a part of a TV show even after his death. … The fact of the matter is, as much as we love him, now that I’m really running Marvel, I like to keep a type of artistic integrity, which means we don’t stretch the bounds of reality.”
But suddenly, Feige appeared behind Whedon wearing a “Coulson Lives” shirt, and announced, “There was never going to be a ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ show without Agent Phil Coulson!”
Whedon’s respose? “He’s headlining the S.H.I.E.L.D. show and always was.”
And as for Gregg…he was nothing but humble, showing love for all the fans for their support:
“I grew up loving comics…One of the greatest things about it is that I got to connect with people like you, so thank you for being apart of it.”
