Take A Look At Aaron Sorkin’s Unorthodox Approach To His Steve Jobs’ Biopic

It is a given fact that Aaron Sorkin is a master of writing…but despite his wonderful history in television and film, could he pull off one hell of an ambitious story structure for his upcoming Steve Jobs biopic?

It is a given fact that Aaron Sorkin is a master of writing…but despite his wonderful history in television and film, could he pull off one hell of an ambitious story structure for his upcoming Steve Jobs biopic?

In a recent interview, the “West Wing” creator said that he plans not to create a script with a normal narrative, but instead tell the entrepreneur’s story in three extended scenes:

“[T]his entire movie is going to be three scenes, and three scenes only. That all take place in real time… There will be no time cuts and each will take place before a product launch. Backstage before a product launch. The first one being the Mac, the second one being NeXT after he had left Apple and the third one being the iPod.”

While the idea of a film or story playing out in real time is definitely not new, to use the structure on such a huge scale isn’t common.  But as Apple said in its “Think Different” campaign, “Here’s to the crazy ones…”  And if anyone could pull it off, it would be Sorkin…

To finish on a high note, I leave you with a quotation from Sorkin about making a film worthy of Jobs.  Be warned…the quotation will give away the possible ending of the movie, but at the same time, will leave you with chills:

“I don’t know if you remember the ad campaign he did – It was the ‘Think Different’ campaign. ‘Here’s to the crazy ones.’ That’s how it began. If I can end the movie with that text and that voice over… If I can earn that ending, then I will have written the movie that I wanted to write.”
