“Cooper Troopers”? “Bradley’s Angels”? “People who like hot guys who can sing”?
If Lady Gaga fans are called “little monsters,” what will we call Bradley Cooper fans because after hearing him sing in the A Star Is Born trailer I suspect he will gather a whole new fanbase. Yes, I know the four-time Oscar nominee is already adored by many, but that voice and that guitar has me thinking we are going to need an official name for his new fan club…which I will be the president of.
If the title of this film sounds familiar that’s because it is the third remake of the wildly popular 1937, 1954 and 1976 versions with the same name. The 1937 film starred Janet Gaynor and Frederic March and was then worked into a musical adaptation starring Judy Garland and James Mason in 1954. In 1976, Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson starred in the rock-musical version of the film. With names like Garland and Streisand paving the way, it looks like Gaga has huge shoes to fill. I don’t want to speak too soon but judging by the trailer I think Gaga is going to slip right into those shoes with no trouble at all.
The premise of the film follows seasoned musician, Jackson Maine (Cooper), as he discovers and subsequently falls in love with amateur singer, Ally (Gaga). As Ally’s confidence is restored, she chooses to once more chase her dream of being a singer. When Ally’s career begins to take off, the relationship the two share begins to diminish as Maine combats his own personal demons. If this isn’t enough to entice you, the film is being advertised as a “musical romantic drama film”…AKA every genre necessary to be a bonafide hit!
The film marks Cooper’s directorial debut, as well as Gaga’s first leading role in a feature film. Adding to the hype, Dave Chappelle makes his long awaited return to acting alongside supporting roles played by Andrew Dice Clay and Sam Elliot. The only downside to all of this is that we have to wait until October 5th for this film to hit theaters. Something tells me it will be worth the wait though!
