The 83rd Academy Award Nominations! - POP GOES THE WEEK!!

The 83rd Academy Award Nominations!

-by Mike Finkelstein.

This morning at 8:30am EST/5:30am PST, the nominations for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards were announced in Hollywood, CA.  And as always, there were the expected nominations, and the ones that got people talking…

The two most talked about films this year–THE KING’S SPEECH and THE SOCIAL NETWORK–didn’t disappoint, with the first bringing in a total of 12 nominations and the second a total of 8 nominations.  TRUE GRIT actually had the second most nominations overall, beating SOCIAL NETWORK with 10.

While the Best Picture nominations seemed pretty cut and dry this year, there was definitely a bit of a shake-up in the Best Director category. Joel and Ethan Coen, who had been shut out of many of the early awards, got a nod for TRUE GRIT, while Christopher Nolan got no love for INCEPTION (a fact that many of my friends have already taken to Facebook and Twitter about).

Also two little aspects that’ll have people talking: Javier Bardem coming into the Best Actor race for BIUTIFUL, and Andrew Garfield being completely snubbed in the Best Supporting Actor category, despite getting love from almost every other awards show of the year.

And don’t forget the wonder that is TOY STORY 3, which not only got a Best Picture nomination, but also a Best Animated Feature and a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination.  (The Best Animated Feature category was trimmed down to just three this year, so there will be many TANGLED and DESPICABLE ME lovers who will be angry for a while.)

Take a look at the full list of nominees below, and let us know what you think!
