Yes! It’s official! Kevin Tancharoen has been tapped for a full length MORTAL KOMBAT movie!
Let me explain. Back in June 2010, Tancharoen put together what he called his “pitch” for a brand new MORTAL KOMBAT movie. Based in the real world, REBIRTH showcased how the MK universe would look in the real world (a la BATMAN BEGINS to Batman). Fans loved it, but Warner Bros wasn’t convinced yet.
Instead of immediately giving him the movie, WB decided to fund a nine-episode webseries called MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY, with each episode focusing on a new character. The response was so huge, that now, almost ten months after that announcement, they are giving him the film.
Tancharoen will be directing from a script by Oren Uziel. Entertainment Weekly spoke to Tenchareon, and he says that the new film will be true to the game, but also to reality:
“Up to this point, we’ve only been talking rated-R…I like realistic takes on things. I like it when it’s a little darker and grittier. And I want the martial arts to feel real as opposed to balletic and super-choreographed. It needs to feel brutal, because that’s the nature of the video game itself.”
