Viral videos have a life of their own. Something can enjoy a resurgance of popularity for reasons we will never begin to know. This clip, often referred to as Cat Deeley’s ‘live TV freakout’ moment is making the rounds again – but most of the time, one important detail is left out of the explanation.
First, watch the clip, and then I’ll explain. Be forewarned: there is one huge F-bomb coming your way. If you don’t want the F-word echoing through your house or office, turn the speakers down or click away!
Sure, I don’t recommend shouting the F-word to people on television, but if you have ever watched one of these shows, (and hasn’t everyone at least once?) don’t you kind of rally for her here? Depending on your perspective it’s fortunate (or unfortunate) that this didn’t really happen. At least not the way you think.
This scene is actually from a 2008 parody of reality shows from English comedian Peter Kay, entitled Britain’s Got the Pop Factor and Possibly a New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar Superstar Strictly on Ice. Lambasting the insanity of reality competition shows in general, Kay got the very funny Cat Deeley, who knows a thing or two about hosting a reality competition show, to play the host in this sketch. The show was done in 2008, but as I said before, you never know when a viral video will get new life online.
I met and interviewed Cat Deeley a couple of years ago, and she was not only beautiful but fun and funny. I’m not surprised she’d be game for something like this. She’s also a really good sport, because seconds before our interview I inadvertently made a joke that was not at ALL intended to sound sexual and COMPLETELY ended up sounding sexual. I was mortified. She laughed her butt off. I’m very lucky.
