The person who uploaded the video writes on their vimeo page:
Bored of being in a dark room, she flips on the light, opens the door and bails.
This particular episode takes place at 1am. We were startled out of bed by a loud THWAP! Making sure there were no zombies, I put her back in the room, and set up the camera.
This is why we keep doors locked with her around. We don’t need her harassing the neighbors.
To answer some commonly seen questions…
No, there is nobody else in the room with her. Nobody propped her up. She learned how to open doors years ago of her own accord, and continued to do so. This video was recorded 2 years prior. —> vimeo.com/5085708
Yes, she CAN open round knobs, too. I do have a video of it, but it was taken on a Motorola Razr in 2004, so looks like it was recorded on a potato.
No, she was not injured in the fall. Her little snakey bones are very flexible, and surrounded by a lot of dense muscle. The only thing wounded in this clip was her pride.
The door handle was removed immediately after this clip was filmed. Cute as she was, pythons are destructive in their exploring and we didn’t want to wake up to the flat a shambles.
Julius passed away in early 2012. She had been battling a systemic infection for over a year. We’re not sure what caused it, even the exotics vet was stumped. No treatment had any effect – and we tried everything the collective hivemind of reptile owners around the globe could think of. Our options were then amputate a few feet of her tail, which she may not survive, or have her humanely euthanized.
*sigh*
Rest in peace, you giant banana slug. We love you.
