It’s a stifling 96 degrees here in NYC so it’s only fitting that Lin-Manuel Miranda released the music video for Andra Day’s cover of “Burn” today.
From the Miranda’s genius mind comes the latest installment of his year-long endeavor #Hamildrops, where once each month fans are treated to new content from the hit Broadway show, Hamilton. The content this month is a music video for a cover that was released on The Hamilton Mixtape back in 2016. The black and white video depicts the gut wrenching tale of a woman coping with the infidelity of her husband. In the Broadway show, Eliza Schuyler discovers her husband, Alexander Hamilton, has had an affair after he publishes letters shared between he and his mistress. Eliza removes herself from Alexander’s narrative until they are pushed back together after suffering a great loss. In the music video, the female protagonists finds comfort and strength in strangers and ultimately decides to give the ring back to the man she once loved.
The passionate mood of the video coincides perfectly with Andra Day’s vocals and truly tugs at the heartstrings. There’s also a transformative moment for her in the video as well…and can I just say, she is such a stunner! She is gorgeous and I suddenly feel like I can do anything today!
