Mortal Kombat Webseries Starts Production

Last summer, we were treated with a little Mortal Kombat short that was thrown on YouTube.  Over the last few months, MORTAL KOMBAT – REBIRTH has been developing a base, and fans have been begging to see more.

Now, A digital MORTAL KOMBAT – REBIRTH series is underway in Vancouver, bringing back originals Michael Jai White as Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs and Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade.

The series will be directed by the original short’s director, Kevin Tancharoen (who also directed the recent remake of FAME).  He says:

“It’s extremely gratifying to have such talented actors playing these iconic roles…They will bring the essence of ‘Mortal Kombat’ to life and gamers will be deeply immersed into the game’s universe.”

As you can see by the short below, Tancharoen was going for a more real world-grit feel instead of the campy comic-like characters of the original films (This was his calling card to direct a brand new feature-length adaptation).  Along with the other characters mentioned in the short, Darren Shahlavi will join the case as Kano, and producers say that each episode will delve deep into each character’s history, as well as the game’s universe.
