Only a few months ago, a handwritten letter written by Paul McCartney was found at a Liverpool yard sale, folded up in a book.  Now, that letter has sold at Christie’s for an estimated $55,000.

According to MSNBC, the letter, dated Aug. 12, 1960 to an unnamed drummer inviting him to audition for the Beatles sold for 34,850 pounds yesterday.  It was expected to fetch 7-9,000 pounds.

Online Beatles timelines suggest that the letter showed how McCartney was seeking an alternative to drummer Pete Best until the very last minute.  (Best joined the Beatles on August 12.)  Best was thrown out of the band two years later.
