Pop singers are no strangers to product placements. Everyone from Lady Gaga to Britney Spears have littered their music videos with brand names to help offset the costs. But Jennifer Lopez’s performance at the AMA’s Sunday night broke new, unfortunate ground… when suddenly a Fiat appeared on the stage as she performed her single “Papi.”
To begin her performance, Lopez began singing a ballad, proceeding to lead us to believe that she was about to burst into tears over the emotional nature of her song. Then she looked up in a ‘the joke’s on you!’ kind of way, as she stripped down and the commercial began. The joke was on us.
As the club music raged,Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â a Fiat came out,Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â surrounded by dancers and lights, leaving many viewers wishing they themselves could drive off from such an ill-fitting plug. Even celebrity viewersÃƒâ€šÃ‚Â were a little put off… John Legend tweeted: “That had to be the most shameless thing I’ve ever seen in a performance. I was genuinely shocked.”
Three different Fiat’s have been J-Lo’s form of transportation in a series of commercials over the past few months, and obviously that synergy was continuing here. But it always seemed like an odd match. Just like you don’t wear a cocktail dress to a day care center, J-Lo seems a little too glam for what looks like a fairly practical car. As a side-note, Even with the pairing sales for the cars have been lackluster.
But the real question is – what’s next? Katy Perry eating Triscuits? Britney Spears using some Vick’s Vapo-rub? Where will this horrible trend take us?
