Why Cee Lo Green’s New Year’s Eve Performance Caused A Stir

A simple tweak to the lyrics of John Lennon's classic 'Imagine' got folks in a tizzy. Now, Green's reported tweet in response has apparently been deleted.

A simple tweak to the lyrics of John Lennon’s classic ‘Imagine’ got folks in a tizzy. Now, Green’s reported tweet in response has apparently been deleted.

During NBC’s televising “New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly” Green sang the song, but made a slight change to the words:  Instead of singing “Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too,” Green instead sang, “Nothing to kill or die for, and all religion’s true.”

This sparked a firestorm on twitter from both fans and celebrities alike.

According to the Huffington Post, Cee Lo Green responded to the controversy: “Yo I meant no disrespect by changing the lyric guys! I was trying to say a world were u could believe what u wanted that’s all.” But that tweet no longer appears on his twitter feed.

But his critics didn’t stop at the lyrics.  According to MSNBC, “He was also criticized by some for singing the song, which includes the lyrics “imagine no posessions” and “no need for greed or hunger” while dressed in a full-length fur coat and jewels.”

Below is a clip of the moment, uploaded by a YouTube member. (Not me.) There is some commentary below that we did not compile here.
