Joss Whedon Wants AVENGERS 2 To Be “Smaller, More Personal”
Joss Whedon is behind the wheel of what is basically the most anticipated movie of this year: THE AVENGERS. And luckily for all of us, he is saying the most sane thing anybody behind such a huge movie could ever say: He wants the sequel to be “smaller” and “more personal”.
According to Joblo, Whedon has said that if there is a follow up, he doesn’t want it to go crazy with the action, but still stay true to all the characters involved:
“I want to know what makes them tick, what makes them flawed, what makes them fight – and ultimately, what makes them awesome…I go to these movies for those moments when the heroes define themselves, either through action or deliciously overwritten speeches.”
I was not sarcastic when I said that Whedon was saying the smartest thing anyone could about such a project. There have been way too many huge superhero films that have collapsed under the weight of too many elements, BATMAN AND ROBIN, SPIDERMAN 3 and IRON MAN 2 being three very notable examples. If he could bring THE AVENGERS to the big screen and show us a movie with that many characters that doesn’t lose track, then I say let him do a sequel exactly the way he wants to do it: small, intimate, and true to the characters.
THE AVENGERS hits theaters on May 4th.
And yeah…watch the trailer yet again, because you know you want to.
