London’s West End is the future home of the production, which opens on December 11th. But it’s not a literal interpretation of the story of five girls engineered for pop stardom. Judy Craymer (creator of “Mamma Mia!”) and writer Jennifer Saunders (of “Absolutely Fabulous” ) envision the Spice Girls music styled around an “American Idol”-style singing contest. The lead character, Viva, is a young woman with a crazy home life and adoption issues. I’m serious.
Says Saunders, to the London Telegraph: “My daughters, who are now in their 20s, were such fans of the Spice Girls …And I just didn’t want someone to mess it up, because I had a sense of how it should be, and I thought I’d hate to go to it and it not be what I wanted.”
Let’s hope it’s hysterical and a little self mocking. Meanwhile, enjoy a little “Wannabe” love… you gotta admit, its catchy!
