Videogame junkies rejoice! Assassins Creed just landed a major headliner and a lot more momentum.
Last year we were told that Ubisoft, the company behind the very successful 3rd person video game Assassins Creed was shopping a movie. Ubisoft looked to Sony Pictures to take the reins, but the deal was put on hold because unlike plenty of popular games turned into movies, the film would have been first and foremost put under the control of Ubisoft themselves. The gaming company would have had approval over Actors, writers, directors, budget and release date… They literally could have produced a game that would have released the same week as the movie as a lead in or have the game come out weeks after the film as a sort of sequel. The deal was put on hold for a while but now it looks like the film is moving forward. Variety is now reporting that Ubisoft has turned its sights on Prometheus Star Michael Fassbender for the lead role and are now looking to jump start the project to bring a writer and director in as soon as possible.
For those of you who don’t know, the story of the Assassins Creed games (which have had 4 mainstream releases and a 5th in the series coming out later this year) it is historical fiction that has tied in the crusades, and renaissance to the existing of two factions the assassins and the Knights Templar who have been fighting for hundreds of years.
It follows a man named Desmond who with advanced technology is able to go back in time to relive the memories of two important Assassins while trying to find clues about how to beat the Templar foes. One or two big name actors have lent their voices for the games, the list includes Kristen Bell who has been a part of the series since its inception in 2007.
Personally, I’m a very big fan of Fassbender and of the Assassins Creed series and the directions they can go with the film is endless. They have covered so many time periods and so many famous names that include Popes, Da Vinci, Machiavelli, etc. I think picking the writer and director will be almost more important than a cast to star beside Fassbender. This is a series that has a large game-playing fan base that looks for certain things but if they get the right script and a director willing to push the envelope this could be a pretty big series.
