Weekend Box Office Report- Dark Knight Dethroned!

Steven Panzarella breaks down last weekends box office numbers.

It took a few weeks, but two movies have finally moved ahead of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES at the box office!

Coming in first this weekend was Jeremy Renner in the Jason Bourne-less sequel, THE BOURNE LEGACY. LEGACY grossed $40 million in its opening weekend which was under expectations, but still above everyone else.

Renner stars as Aaron Cross, an agent who, like Jason Bourne, has worked as an assassin.  The only difference is Cross knows who he is.  After an attempt on his life, Cross decides to go after those in charge. BOURNE brings back some old faces including Scott Glenn, Albert Finney, and David Straithairn and brings in some new faces including Edward Norton and Rachel Weisz.

Coming in second this week was the hilarious political comedy THE CAMPAIGN, starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifinakis. THE CAMPAIGN made $27.4 million this weekend which was above Warner Brothers’ expectations. The film follows long term North Carolina congressmen Cam Brady (Farrell) who never had any competition in his district, until dimwitted Marty Huggins (Galifinakis) comes along to challenge him for his seat. If you’re not already won over by Will Ferrell’s charm and the hilariously awkward Galifinakis, I say just go for the ridiculous slow motion punching of a baby. THE CAMPAIGN also stars Jason Sudekis, Dylan McDermott, John Lithgow, and Brian Cox.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES grabbed another $19.5 million dollars which was good enough for 3rd and brings its overall total to $835 million dollars. From the look of it, Christopher Nolan’s final film in THE DARK KNIGHT series will fall short of its 1 billion dollar goal.

The other new edition to this weeks lineup was HOPE SPRINGS, starring Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell. The new drama came in fourth with $15.6 million.  SPRINGS follows Kay(Streep) and Arnold (Jones), who after 30 years of marriage have lost all the excitement in their lives.
