Green Day’s “American Idiot” Gets Picked Up By Universal

Get ready all Green Day fans: “American Idiot” is one step closer to being on the big screen.

Universal Studios is in negotiations to pick up the screen rights to the smash hit play and has tapped Michael Mayer, the director of the stage production, to helm the film.

Dustin Lance Black (MILK) is in discussion to write the screenplay, and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, will produce via Playtone.  (If you remember, Hanks and Goetzman optioned the rights before Idiot even began its Broadway run.)

Hanks, Goetzman and Universal were also behind the movie version of MAMMA MIA.  Here’s to hoping AMERICAN IDIOT takes it to the next level.
