By night, I am the Caped Contributor for PGTW. But by day, I am a mere sidekick to a polarizing, unfathomably talented jack of all trades. And while I love being an assistant to such a great boss, I think it is safe to say that all of us sidekicks dream of the day that we will be the ones making headlines. Well for the iconic Robin of Batman & Robin, that day has finally come.
I am a huge fan of Titans in the DC Comic world. The comic book, much like the new series, follows Robin aka Dick Grayson as he foregoes the mantle of “Robin” and flies solo with the new persona of Nightwing. Nightwing is a confident leader, with a bit more grit and maturity than Robin could ever possess while in the shadows of the Caped Crusader. Nightwing assembles a team of super sidekicks and takes on the evils of the world. The team is not all sidekicks though as DC Comics did a great job of introducing some brand new characters into the fold over the comic book’s tenure. Some of which we will see in the series.
This fall, DC Comics is releasing a streaming service entitled DC Universe and debuted trailers from their highly anticipated, exclusive content today at San Diego’s Comic-Con. From the trailers shown, Titans is definitely getting the most buzz. The trailer shows Robin’s transition into Nightwing as he tries to help the demonically possessed Raven. Other “Titans” making an appearance in the trailer are energy-blasting Starfire, shapeshifting Beast Boy, and the aviary duo Hawk and Dove. While the battle sequences and special effects are enough to spark a conversation, there are two specific moments that have everyones jaw’s on the floor. 1. Robin kills a thug in the trailer, which is unheard of in the world of superheroes. 2. When asked about the whereabouts of Batman he responds with “F*** Batman.” WHAT?!?! See I know I am a good assistant because that has never been my response…yet. What has happened to the peanut butter and jelly of the superhero world?!
The series looks great and is a promising glimpse into what can come out of DC Universe. The series stars Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson, Anna Diop as Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven, Ryan Potter as Beast Boy, Alan Ritchson as Hawk and Minka Kelly as Dove. Titans is expected to stream this fall, but in the meantime check out the trailer below!
