VIDEO: The Fray’s NCAA Championship National Anthem…What Just Happened?!

To sing The Star Spangled Banner at a sporting event is a coveted honor. However, with every amazing Whitney Houston-like performance, we get a Roseanne Barr or a Carl Lewis. If you were to bet me which side a rendition by The Fray would have fallen, 100% of the time, I would have said with Whitney. And I would be wrong.

And I would be wrong.

The Fray were chosen to sing the national anthem in front of tonight’s NCAA championship, and what they delivered, while unique and probably a good idea in theory, was nowhere near the anthem we know.

Instead of going a Capella with a few harmonies sprinkled in, lead singer Issac Slade was backed by a finger-picking guitar that sounded like it was hitting wrong notes half the time, and a drum that seemed like it was going off beat just as often.

In the end, the crowd cheered, but the rest of the world of twitter and news attacked.

Watch the video below, and let us know what you think…good in theory, or just plain awful?
