IGC Director Says WATCHMEN Is The Main Reason Why We Have Not Seen More Video Game Adaptations In Film

Irrational Games creative director Kevin Levine has revealed that WATCHMEN is the main reason why we have not seen many Video Game adaptations.

WatchmenA few years ago, the gaming world and the movie world collided. A few low budget video game adaptations broke through, and while almost none were critically successful, a few won big at the box office.

So my question is, besides the recent RESIDENT EVIL and SILENT HILL sequels, why have we not seen more?

According to Irrational Games Creative director Kevin Levine, it’s because of Zach Snyder’s box office failure WATCHMEN.

Levine says that the boat was moving on a BIOSHOCK film with Gore Verbinski at the helm, but WATCHMEN destroyed that:

“Gore wanted to make a hard R film. Then ‘Watchmen’ came out, and it didn’t do well. The studio then got cold feet about making an R rated $200 million film, and they said what if it was a $80 million film- and Gore didn’t want to make a $80 millionfilm. They brought another director in, and I didn’t really see the match there. So they said if you want to kill it, kill it. And I killed it.”

But don’t fret, video game fans…game adaptations aren’t totally gone…according to reports, Michael Fassbender is working on ASSASSINS CREED, Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) is attached to NEED FOR SPEED, former Marvel head Avi Arad is trying to make the successful game franchise UNCHARTED into a film, and Duncan Jones (MOON, SOURCE CODE) is attached to a WORLD OF WARCRAFT adaptation that is still in the works.

So what about BIOSHOCK?  Levine says we may still see a movie in the future, but for now, it will sit gathering dust until “the right combination of people” come along.
