You all knew it was coming…and now we can officially announce that THE AVENGERS has broken the domestic opening weekend box office record!

According to a Disney press release, the highly anticipated film, which brings together for the first time all of Marvel’s previous superheroes, including Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and Hulk, posted an estimated $200.3 million from Friday to Sunday alone, making it the first movie EVER to make over $200 million in its debut.

Those numbers shattered the previous record of $169.9 million, set by HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART II.  It also means that Friday’s take of $80.5 million sits at second on the all-time Friday list, and Saturday’s box office gross of $69.7 million is the highest Saturday take of all time.

So far, THE AVENGERS’ cumulative global box office gross is an estimated $641.8 million in only 12 days in release.  The film has now opened in all major markets except Israel, Poland, and Japan.

Don’t worry, Marvel fans…there are plenty more movies in store.  Marvel and Disney have already announced IRON MAN 3 has a release date for May 3, 2013, THOR 2 is set for November 15, 2013, and CAPTAIN AMERICA II is hitting theaters for April 4, 2014. (So basically, we wait a year and get a new Marvel movie every six months after…Hell yes!)

Now, let’s see if it could smash the all-time domestic record, still held by AVATAR…
