LIVE BLUNDER: WNBC’s Sue Simmons and Chuck Scarborough Caught Off Guard (Again!)

WNBC's anchor team Sue Simmons and Chuck Scarborough (mostly Sue, actually) again fell victim to the perils of live television Monday night.

WNBC’s anchor team Sue Simmons and Chuck Scarborough (mostly Sue, actually) again fell victim to the perils of live television Monday night.

As credits to the NBC late night show “Smash” were rolling, Sue was evidently telling a story that trailed off in to the live open of the 11pm newscast.

As the open video to the show rolled, Simmons could be heard saying “the ball took a bad hop and hit me in my breast.”

Suddenly, Scarborough came to realize that the show was already live, saying, “Are we on?”

For the record, a ‘bad hop,’ (in baseball or softball terms) is a ground ball that takes an unexpected bounce upwards. It’s not uncommon for ‘bad hops’ to take a player off guard and hit them in the face, throat, or, well… worse.

Here’s the moment, caught on tape… (and below that, Sue Simmons’ infamous live TV moment that causes a stir back in 2008.

This gaffe pales in comparison to Simmons’s 2008 flub during a show tease. Thinking she had finished the hit, she let an F-bomb drop on live tv. She later issued an apology, and only seemed to cement her beloved status as one of NYC’s most loved anchors.

Simmons is actually leaving WNBC (her news home for more than three decades) in June. The station decided not to renew her contract.
